Gut disorders, especially IBS, can begin with negative thinking, stress, and anxiety, not just food. Sometimes, a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle are not enough to minimise symptoms of IBS. Research has found that hypnosis has a substantial therapeutic effect on IBS.
Hypnosis has also been shown to help balance the nervous in some IBS sufferers, which is an important, and often overlooked, part of IBS treatment. You may know that the autonomic nervous system is comprised of two parts: the sympathetic nervous system (or the fight-or-flight response) and the parasympathetic nervous system (or the rest-and-digest system).
It also has a third component, the enteric nervous system, which is found in the gastrointestinal lining and is often linked to digestive disorders. This is the largest and most complex part of the autonomic nervous system, and it has been referred to as the brain in the gut or the second brain.
Gut-inflaming foods need to be avoided especially if you have – IBS, skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, candida over growth and a general feeling of sluggishness.
The foods to avoid are grains, especially wheat, gluten, legumes, refined sugars, dairy, processed foods and unhealthy vegetable oils.
Alcohol & coffee is also a danger zone with gut health. This can be tough, but if you keep consuming either of these during the early stages of your leaky gut recovery, you’ll simply be treading water and going nowhere.
Chronic stress can be as bad as gluten for your gut. The causes of stress (work, family, social etc) can be just about as hard to avoid as gluten itself but with hypnotherapy techniques, we can relieve this.
